Measuring Instructions

See the measuring guide in the third image of the listing for a visual on where to measure.

Girth Strap

Measure the full circumference (in inches) of the girth about two inches behind the elbow (or wherever you want the girth strap to sit).

Chest Strap

Measure the distance (in inches) from left and right side of the girth across the front of the chest.

Counterbalance Handle

  1. Stand up straight next to your dog while they are standing in a natural position.
  2. Let your arm hang at your side. Your arm should be relaxed with your palm facing your leg, not reaching or bending down.
  3. Measure the distance from the top of your dog’s back up to the center of your palm.

Pull Strap

The pull strap length is purely personal preference with how far out in front of you you prefer your dog to be for momentum pulling.

Frequently Asked Questions About Service Dog Harnesses

Are the counterbalance handles and pull straps rigid, semi-rigid, or flexible?

Outer Space Dog Gear counterbalance handles and pull straps are made with flexible biothane.

Can you make the service dog harness adjustable for my growing dog?

While Outer Space Dog Gear service dog harnesses do have a small amount of adjustability, they are intended only for dogs whose bodies are fully developed. These harnesses are designed for fully grown service dogs who have received appropriate veterinary clearance for mobility related tasks. Mobility work should not be performed by dogs that are still growing.

Should I choose a y-front or straight front harness for my service dog?

Both y-front and straight front harnesses are widely used by service dog teams, and neither is inherently better than the other. The right choice often depends on the individual dog, the handler’s preferences, and how the harness will be used day to day.
